When I was in college, we used to say “When The Revolution Comes”…the world is going to look like this and we’d list off all kinds of things we hoped would happen — things like peace, love, harmony and so on. We had no idea how to start a revolution. We were pacifists. I still am. I still don’t know how to start one, but I want to reclaim the tradition, as a reminder of everything we’re missing and as a counterbalance to all the things happening now, so here goes….
When the revolution comes, voting will be a required part of civic life. Schools will close, factories, farms and everything else will be closed and everyone must vote at such an age as they understand what’s being asked.
When the revolution comes, people will want to know things again.
When the revolution comes, people will understand that there is only one race: human.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have enough food to eat.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have appropriate clothes — neither too much nor too little for their situation.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have a house to protect them from the elements, and a bed to lay their heads.
When the revolution comes, people will have the healthcare they need.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have clean water and enough of it for their needs.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have clean air and the climate will return to the normal, stable thing it was.
When the revolution comes, people will actually know each other — not everything about others, but enough to be safe.
When the revolution comes, people will trust each other. When the revolution comes, our leaders will be trustworthy. When the revolution comes, government will work again.
When the revolution comes, guns will not be wanted on our streets. When the revolution comes, people will lay down their arms, and melt them down, never to be seen again.
When the revolution comes, there will be no billionaires. It will be illegal to make more money than you could ever use in ten lifetimes.
When the revolution comes, people like Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump and anyone who uses their power to intentionally hurt others, or command others to do so, will be in jail, forgotten.
When the revolution comes, justice will feel like justice and laws will feel reasonable.
When the revolution comes, people who don’t actually harm someone, who simply exist will be out of every jail in the world, free to be whoever they are.
When the revolution comes, people’s lives will want far more meaning and people will care far less about money.
When the revolution comes, the people will accept limits on themselves as human beings, and not impose limits on others they know nothing about.
When the revolution comes, children will be safe.
When the revolution comes, people will own their own bodies, and not someone else’s.
When the revolution comes, everyone will have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness after they are born. The Constitution will say so and it will not be changed.
When the revolution comes, we will have peace, and lots of good music, and joy will rule the land.
Will this happen when Jesus comes back? Yes. Can it happen sooner, while he and we can enjoy it? I sure hope so. It’s something to aim for.
Resisting With Peace,
John
